Proof that the catalog sucks (as if I did not know it already)

Once again, I am in the middle of planning another display. Seems like the story of my life. Anyhow, this has to fall under "things I could not make up if I tried." I decided to go with something fun for October and do a display on horror and thrillers. You know, from Edgar Allan Poe to Stephen King kind of thing. Nothing too hard. So, I go to our "trusty" library catalog, and I type "horror and fiction" as keywords, just to see what is there. Care to guess what the first item was on the list?

(Pause to wait for guesses).

The first item on that search, which yielded 36 results was:

Bosman, Ellen. Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered Literature: A Genre Guide. (WorldCat record here).

Because we all know there is nothing scarier than GLBT literature. Hide the children and lock the doors. And by the way, I ordered that book at the end of the last fiscal year to add to our meager GLBT holdings, in spite of some protests from colleagues who said, and I quote, "nobody is ever going to use that." Anyhow, want to know what other "fine" choices the catalog, provided by the fine folks at SissyWhiny, listed? Here goes:
  • Rob Davidson, The Master and the Dean: the literary criticism of Henry James and Wiliam Dean Howells (WorldCat record here). Because we just know those two are scary as hell. Thinking about being stuck in some American lit. class having to read, not their fiction mind you, but their criticism is spooky enough.
Anyhow, just a quick post, and did I mention our library catalog sucks?

Comments

What are the pictures like in "Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered Literature: A Genre Guide?" The quality of the photography in some of the under-the-counter stuff from the sixties was pretty dire.

"The Master and the Dean" sounds a bit BDSM.
Probably because the LCSH is the rather outdated phrase "Horror tales" rather than "Horror fiction."

A search in my library's catalog brought up The Master and the Dean as well. *shudder*
